It comes to this, it is the adage of a gear and a offset triangular piece of steel driven by a spring hitting against the gear to stop over spooling,simple but effective. I think they had it right all those year ago.If you fish for salmon and steelhead;Do it with a click checked reel. There are many reasons for this. First, and most importantly, it is more fun! And that, for me, is what it's all about - there is nothing better than fishing a tight line to a good reel. After you fish with a checking reel you will never go back. The fish can run, fight and jump, tantalizing your eyes and making your heart race and your reflexes tense, but with the aid of the audible check, it brings yet another of your sense to the party.

Second, I have found disc drags to be too sensitive because by turning the knob too loose there is potentially a mess from over spool. If it is too tight, you may have the dreaded "head shake" on the surface, then out comes the hook, then out come the swear words *#!!$#^% . With a click drag system, it is a "set it and forget it" idea. It only needs to be set to stop over spooling and no mechanical drag is as reactive as the anger. Now the fish can come and take the fly, turn in the water column increasing positive hook ups in the corner of the mouth, rather than on the top, resulting in fewer lost fish. I discovered this after my first spey reel (a fantastic, state of the art disc drag) was replaced with a checking reel. After I made this change, my lost fish count dropped dramatically.

These first models are the result of over five years of research and dedication of the promotion of the click and pawl reel. They were built for spey fishermen, by a spey fisherman.

REEL SPECIFICATIONS IN METRIC MEASUREMENT:

Summer Spey = 329 Grams 101.6 mm x 38.1mm spool gap 25.5 mm
Symmetry Skagit= 357 Grams 101.6 mm x 48.2 mm spoolgap 28.3 mm
Symmetry Spey = 397 Grams 101.6 mm X 53.3 mm spool gap 36.5 mm
River Spey = 425 Grams 111.7 mm x 53.3 mm spool gap 36.5 mm

REEL SPECIFICATIONS IN INCHES:

Summer Spey = 11.6 0z. 4" x 1 1/2" spool gap 1 "
symmetry Skagit= 12.5 0z 4" x 1 7/8 " spool gap 1 1/8 "
Symmetry Spey= 14.5 oz 4"x 2 1/8" spool gap 1 1/2 "
River Spey= 15.5 oz 4 5/16" x 2 1/8" spool gap 1 1/2 "

REEL TO ROD SUGGESTIONS:

Summer Spey 12/13 foot spey rods
Symmetry Skagit 13/14 foot spey rods
Symmetry Spey 14/16 foot spey rods
River Spey 15/18 foot spey rods

BACKING CAPACITIES ARE AN ESTIMATION AND ARE MEASURED WITH SPEY LINES:

Summer Spey 180 #30 pound gel spun +100 yards varivas+36' Rio AFS 6/7 400grain
150 yds of #30 dacron and a 6/7 CND GPS

Symmetry Skagit Rio windcutter 8/9/10 + 175 #30 dacron
Skagit head + 100 varivas + 250 yards #30 dacron

Symmetry Spey Rio windcutter 9/10/11 +200 yards #30 dacron
Rio Mid Spey 9/10 +175 yards #30 dacron
Next cast long belly 9/10 + 150 yards #30dacron

River Spey Rio Mid Spey 10/11 + 300 yards #30 dacron
Rio xlt +250 yards #30 dacron
Double taper +200 yards #30 dacron

The weights of the reel will change with addition of brass and titanium face plates. Please see the 4 styles of the Symmetry Series Spey reels pictured at the right for more information.

Production on the trout reels (Single Spey) has begun. Please expect it to be a few months - I believe anything worth doing is worth doing right and this simply takes time. If you are interested in these smaller sized reels, please contact me. I will place your name on the waiting list and contact you when the reels are ready to assemble. There is no need for a down payment at this time. I will simply email you when I have completed the pieces and at that time, you will be able to choose the finish and hardware. I will be machining out 3", 3.5" and 3.75" trout/switch/spey reels. The list will work the same as with the spey reels; on a first come/first serve basis.

I believe this new line of reels will be a perfect match to meet your bamboo fly rod, switch rod and light spey rod needs. I am very excited to be offering these directly to you, and you know that I will working very hard to meet the demand.

Thank you all again,
Tim

The Spey Reels Are Ready To Assemble!

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; Please expect it to be a few months - I believe anything worth doing is worth doing right and this simply takes time.

New Reels for 2008

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; I will simply email you when I have completed the pieces and at that time, you will be able to choose the finish and hardware. I will be machining out 3", 3.5" and 3.75" trout/switch/spey reels.

The Symmetry Spey Technical Information

The Symmetry Spey was built with an aluminum winding plate to bring the weight down, and give anglers more options for rod length. With a base weight of 14.6 oz, this would be a great match for a 14/15/16 foot spey. Being a mid arbor design for quick line pick up when fighting that salmon or steelhead, it leaves ample spool space for massive amounts of backing with mid to long head lines. My backing capacities are conservative, and are as follows:
Backing capacity = 30#dacron, Rio wind cutter 9/10/11 = 200 yards, Rio mid spey 10/11 = 175 yards, Nextcast longbelly 9/10 = 150 yards

THE SPEY Company Tube Fly Box and String Leech Box

* HOME * RIVER  * SUMMER  *  SKAGIT *    SPEY *     SNAKE ROLL *   TUBE  BOXES *   TUBES *

TUBE FLY BOXES
* The inside dimensions of the box are 8"x4" (18 cm x 9 cm).So it is a great size to fit large salmon and steelhead flies with ease.The boxes come in three different configurations to fit every fisherman's needs.

* This tube fly box system relies on NI-Titanium wire that will not corrode or bend. The wire used is the absolute very best quality I could find. The flies simply are held on the wires that slide into foam slots which keeps them in place on the river. The high quality foam holds the spare hooks as well, so there is no need to carry extra hooks and they are right where you need them. This system keep your tubes and string leeches organized. This side also fits string leeches and shanked flies. The system also excels in holding cone head tube flies.

String leeches are great flies but carring them is a pain with a standard fly box, tangles from the heads swinging were the norm,. With my system insert the hook in the foam put the head under the banding and thats that, your string leeches are in check, simple and effective.

* There has been a movement toward tube flies in steelhead fly fishing. When spey fishing, the hook is in the back of the fly to land more fish. When the steelhead is hooked, the fly slides out of the way and the flies last much longer. If the hook point gets bad (and they will), simply replace the hook and the fly is as good as new. Tube flies and string leeches are great but storing them has been a problem until I started storing them in this manor.

So, with that said, I hope you can enjoy this new product from the Spey Company. Like the Spey Company reels, everything is made right here, in the USA
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Oyjc3h0xAGg/SWAZLBA6c8I/AAAAAAAACuw/WUTJ2Hmxavs/s400/IMGP2077.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287253639574483906" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Oyjc3h0xAGg/SWAZKqdvwyI/AAAAAAAACuo/b-gYFO949tU/s400/IMGP2079.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287253633521402658" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Oyjc3h0xAGg/SWAZKUOq14I/AAAAAAAACug/B4wkSjOm_5Q/s400/IMGP2493.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287253627552585602" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Oyjc3h0xAGg/SWAZJ08m7dI/AAAAAAAACuY/TarOMPuHiwQ/s400/IMGP2066.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287253619155332562" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 302px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Oyjc3h0xAGg/SWAZJewS2-I/AAAAAAAACuQ/2OOrOiAewFo/s400/Picture+9.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287253613198105570" />

HERE IS A GREAT DEMONSTRATION OF THE SPRING PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL I USED IN THESE BOXES. I have been a classic reel enthusiast all my life and I want to see these reels used, protected, preserved and enjoyed. Like my line of reels, the classic reels contain real brass and steel gearing. Most of these reels were produced before anodizing became available, and corrosion is a real problem. I believe I have found the answer to this problem.

In April, The Spey Company will be offering a Classic Reel Care Kit which will include all of the following:

1. A corrosion inhibiting draw string reel bag that will fit spey reels up to 4 1/2" diameter.

2. A grease line applicator with 4cc of grease. I have been using this grease and oil in my classic reels for over two years. The first thought that comes to mind is that this stuff is AMAZING. This grease is the best! It stops all rust and corrosion by creating a gas film over the steel, brass and aluminium. It out-performed all other marine grade grease by several hundred percent in a military test. margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">After having received many emails asking for a 3" trout reel for 3/4/5 wt. bamboo and fiberglass rods in the classic plate wind design, I decided to ask the trout fishermen directly what they would like to see in a reel. I absolutely believe that the fishermen should have a say in the characteristics of the product they will be using. The response was tremendous and the information both highly personal and simply invaluable. I have gathered several reels worth of information, and I've pulled together some of the most common characteristics sought after to create the the Single Spey Trout Reel, which is my introductory trout reel.

This isn't a reel for the masses with elements for this and that style of fishing. This reel will have a small production, so each one is somehow more special and has become a favorite of the reels that I produce. It seems so small compared to the spey reels and it just "purrs like a kitten". I worked very hard on the sound of this reel more so than any other.I believe with this reel, I am closer to my goal of making some of the finest and most affordable click and pawl reels available.

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; Please expect it to be a few months - I believe anything worth doing is worth doing right and this simply takes time.

The Simple Beauty of The Click and Pawl Reel

In the long history of fly fishing reels the oldest and most reproduced drag system has been the click and pawl/pawled or clicker fly reels, how ever you state this system.

These first models are the result of over three years of research and dedication of the promotion of the click and pawl reel. They were built for spey fishermen, by a spey fisherman. Each of the reels in this series are personally hand turned and numbered. The brass elements are polished to a rich shine to lend a classic look to a new reel. The checking system is loud and smooth, reminiscent of period style reels.

Custom Brass Weighting System

At The Spey Company, I am always striving to make innovations to make your precious time on the river more enjoyable. The idea behind the Symmetry series is to aid the angler in achieving perfect balance between rod and reel. Often it is necessary to integrate extra weighting within the reel itself to obtain this objective.

I have had some requests to clarify my custom weighting system. The system consists of 1/2 ounce brass weights that screw into the inside frame of the machine. With the Symmetry series reel's design, I can install up to 8 weights. Each weight is tapped and can be removed at the anglers' convenience at any time. This will give the fishermen the choice of the balance point, custom tailored to their specific needs.

All the fisherman needs to do is determine his/her ideal weight for the reel on the largest rod they will be using it on by following the instructions in the "Balancing Your Spey/Salmon Rod" section found on this site (if that perfect weight is presently unknown), email the weight to me and I will customize their new reel to these specifications. If it is decided (either now or later) that the reel will be used on several different length rods, the weights can be removed or replaced one by one very easily to accommodate this transition.

Balancing Your Salmon/Spey Rod

I have received many emails about how to find the ideal weight of a reel to balance out the rod. Since the thickness of the rod taper and where you grip your cork is unique to each individual spey fisherman, the answer to this question is difficult for me to decide, but can be determined by the spey fisherman with ease. This will also take the guess work out of purchasing spey equipment. Its the old adage of "What came first, the chicken or the egg?". In this circumstance, I believe it is the spey rod. It is important when deciding on the proper rod to consider the size of the river that you will fish most often and the size of the fish that are in the river. The second purchase should be the reel, which is where this little exercise will be invaluable. When choosing your reel, you will need to determine the line and backing capacity needs. The third decision should be the proper weight to balance your rod in hand. This, in my opinion, is the most important step.

Having a balanced spey rod will save on fatigue in two ways. First, you won't have to grip the cork so tightly to lift the tip off the water all day long. Second, in your forward spey casting stroke, a heavy reel will help bend and load your rod without having to you having to exert extra energy. When spey casting, unlike double hauling, your arm is only in the air for seconds. The rest of the time, your arm is in the resting position waiting for the pull. Your upper hand is the "fulcrum" or "pivot point" and your bottom hand is the "counterweight", if you will. By having a heavy bottom hand, the rod will flex and shoot line by using gravity instead of using muscle strength. Also, when you have to grip something so tightly in the resting position, you decrease blood flow. By relaxing your arm and letting your rod balance naturally, you will be able to loosen your grip, increase your blood flow and fish all day without having a heart attack - that comes with the grab!

I will share a simple two step process for which you will need only a few simple supplies before you get started. These include only your spey rod, a plastic sandwich bag, some tape and a handful of weights( PENNIES, ROCKS, MARBLES, CAT FISH WEIGHTS).

Tape the plastic bag to your spey reel seat then add weights until the rod lays across 4 fingers in the resting position. At this point, count or weigh the bag contents, and then you know what your reel should weigh - and I mean really know - not someone else's opinion as to what they guess might be right. Since every one holds their rod in a different spot on the cork, the correct balancing weight will vary from person to person.

Now, armed with this info, looking for a reel that matches the rod in your hand is easier. With the purchase of any of my reels, for an additional fee, I can add weight to the existing machine before I send it to you, so your new reel will be customized uniquely for you to achieve perfect rod/reel symmetry - just plan to be surprised on how much weight it really does take to achieve this!

THE SYMMETRY SERIES

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; Please expect it to be a few months - I believe anything worth doing is worth doing right and this simply takes time.

Spey Company Shipping Address

The Spey Company
2318 Bellevue St.
Green Bay W.I.
54311

Phone
1-920-983-9349

or email me at:
tlpantzlaff@sbcglobal.net
